First Free Spay/Neuter Clinic for Pyramid Lake Pets This Weekend
The first-ever spay/neuter clinic at the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation will be this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13-14. A temporary high-quality, high-volume clinic will be set up in the Wadsworth Community Center to spay and neuter cats and dogs belonging to tribal members – including surgeries and vaccinations – all free of charge.
The effort is a collaboration with Maddie’s® Pet Project in Nevada, Nevada Humane Society, and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Volunteers and supplies will be provided by all three groups. Animals are expected from the tribal communities of Wadsworth, Nixon and Sutcliffe.
“From time to time we see stray dogs and cats around the communities, so this is a great opportunity for our members to improve the lives of their cats and dogs,” said Vinton Hawley, chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. “We look forward to a big turnout.”
Mark Robison, co-executive director of Maddie's® Pet Project in Nevada, said, “When we first met with the Pyramid Lake tribe, they expressed a great desire to help dogs and cats on the reservation. One of our main missions is to improve access to veterinary care across the state so this seemed like a great place to do the first MASH-style clinic of our campaign. We hope to do more here over the next three years and in other underserved areas.”
Veterinary services are being administered by a team of licensed veterinarians and trained staff to provide the best possible care to tribal pets. The clinic is being organized and funded by Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada, thanks to grants from Maddie's Fund and the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation.
