Maddie's Pet Project

A Gathering of Compassion

By Lisa Schuette

A standing-room-gathering of Pahrump area animal rescue groups took place earlier this month to share ideas about how to best help the community’s dogs and cats.

Organized and facilitated by Lisa Schuette of Maddie's® Pet Project in Nevada, volunteers from nine organizations discussed a wide range of topics. These included microchipping, the need for foster families for kittens, low-cost spay and neuter options, and vet services for outlying areas like Beatty and Amargosa Valley. Other topics addressed were costs associated with rescue and outreach, the difficulties of having enough money to pay vet bills, fundraising, and how to build a volunteer base to best serve each organization’s mission.

The evening proved to be inspiring and empowering. “We were so excited and thankful to be able to spend an evening brainstorming on how rescues can come together to share resources and ideas,” said Marleen Szalay of A Path 4 Paws.

In addition to A Path 4 Paws, the organizations that participated were Pets are Worth Saving, Tails of Nye County, All Creatures Animal Hospital, Never Forgotten Animal Society, West Star Ranch, Happy Acre Sanctuary, Furgotten Friends Dog Rescue, and Angel Paws Rescue of Nevada.

Plans are in the works for another networking meeting, with a consensus from the groups in attendance that relationships need to be strengthened – and built – to ensure that animals in Nye County have better access to services.
