142 cats and dogs get spays/neuters at temporary clinic in Wadsworth

A temporary, free spay/neuter clinic was set up Oct. 13-14 at the Wadsworth Community Center, and 142 cats and dogs received surgeries.

“The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe would like to thank Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada, the Nevada Humane Society, and the volunteers who helped to make this project a success this past weekend,” said Vinton Hawley, chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. “If given the opportunity to host an event in our community again, we’d greatly accept and do encourage other communities and Tribes to consider working with these two groups who showed nothing but professionalism and caring in getting our animals spayed and neutered.”

The high-quality, high-volume clinic included pet vaccinations and served the tribal communities of Wadsworth, Nixon and Sutcliffe.

“The number of people seeking services exceeded our expectations,” said Bonney Brown, co-executive director of Maddie's Pet Project in Nevada. “We brought in a third veterinarian Sunday to meet the demand. The graciousness of the people coming to the clinic and the obvious desire to get care for their pets was inspiring. We hope to bring more clinics there in the future.”

Veterinary services were administered by a team of licensed veterinarians and trained staff to provide the best possible care to tribal pets. The clinic was organized and funded by Maddie’s Pet Project in Nevada, thanks to grants from Maddie's Fund and the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, and done in collaboration with Nevada Humane Society and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. All three groups provided supplies, staff and volunteers to make the event a success.

Maddie’s® Pet Project aims to increase live release rates for dogs and cats at Nevada shelters and rescue groups and support access to care in underserved communities in Nevada. This initiative is made possible thanks to Maddie’s Fund® and the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation.
